Surprisingly we do appear to have made good progress with our Christmas travel plans and only took off about one hour late. This morning it looked very different, just as we were wondering about buses it started to snow heavily (~10 cm in less than two hours, impressive for Britain), and it was completely hopeless to even try public road transport. Buses were never going to happen and finding a taxi was also probably going to be challenging even if we were prepared to pay the 'festive-season-double-fee'. What to do?
The solution presented itself in a very unusual route using the only transport networks that was more unusually on time today - a 40 minute hike through deep snow and three trains later we ended up in sight of Luton airport. Our flight was almost the only one that was not delayed until it was discovered that there was one crew member missing … Anyway, given the recent havoc around airplanes this was more or less the best case scenario. An earlier flight to Berlin had been delayed by more than five hours.
It all looks very reasonable at the moment, so all I can do is to wish everybody a merry Christmas. May your plans work out as well.
