Last Decade

The decade was defined by two events that occurred seven years and a few blocks apart. - BBC news

This post was inspired by a short series on the BBC website summarizing the last decade - much of which was utterly incomprehensible as I lived outside of Britain for about 95% of that last decade. But, there are some highs and lows that might be worth reflecting on, so here are some of mine. There might be a post about the last year later, but that should at least wait until after Christmas - you never know.

This image concerns what's probably the biggest change in my life in the last 10 years. This particular one was taken half-way through a 24km hilly hike in Nova Scotia, at the end of which C refused to walk 100m down to the beach for a beer at sundown - on account of the fact that she could no longer walk that far.

It also reminds me of the next picture, taken only two days after:

I know, the colour scheme left to be desired, but the certificate is final and valid nevertheless. There are two more graduation pictures prior to the one shown above, but let's leave that up as the representation of an entire university education in the "noughties".


The, there was also a very memorable summer holiday, with two of us camping in way more rain than intended.

Other things that I can remember, in no particular order:

- spending 3/4 of the decade abroad, that left about 2.5 years for Germany


- moving more often than I care to count, especially during or just after finishing my undergraduate degree. The last few moves in that episode were not even entirely by my own choice


- visiting New Orleans, just weeks before it sank

- traveling half-way around the world to go sailing over Christmas

- etc etc etc.

Oh, and of course there was a time before digital cameras. No exciting pics from way back when, I am afraid.
